Tips on Removing Stains and Odors from the Office Dog
|June 11, 2019
Man’s best friend. Fur baby. Dog. Whatever name you call them, they’re the perfect companion for many people and it’s hard not to love them. For any employee, flexibility at the office is one of the biggest considerations when it comes to finding and accepting a job. For dog owners, bringing their fuzzy roommates into work is a massive ‘pro’ on the list of amenities. Plus, dogs can also provide a significant morale boost to everyone at the office, so in many ways the opportunity to bring them in at all is a gift that keeps on giving.
Praises being sung, there are also some complications that come with allowing dogs into a business environment. It’s important that their presence doesn’t distract from work, whether that is through their behavior or through their impact on the office’s cleanliness. Dogs come with smells, fur, and (sometimes) stains. Even with all that in mind, dogs can be wonderful additions to the office and every bit worth the trouble – as long as you have a plan in place for changing your cleaning routine to accommodate.
Wipe down surfaces
Pet hair has a way of finding its way everywhere, so be sure to wipe down surfaces. No, the dog probably didn’t jump on that desk, but you’d still be surprised his fur ended up there anyway. By wiping down surfaces regularly, you won’t allow clumps of pet fur to build up and ruin the odor or cleanliness of your office.
Spot clean right away
Hopefully, accidents are not a regular occurrence. But if they happen, do make sure to spot clean after them immediately. If you have carpets, a quality carpet cleaner (that you have already tested in an unnoticeable place) is crucial to have on hand, and to apply to the site of the accident immediately. If you have another floor surface, make sure to keep the appropriate cleaning medium available as well. Follow any instructions with your cleaning product to the letter, and hopefully there should be no lingering evidence.
If you have carpets, be sure to have them cleaned professionally
Every business should have their carpets professionally deep cleaned on at least an annual or bi-annual basis, if not more depending on needs. This is especially true for offices that allow any animals at all inside the building. Not only will cleaning the carpet be sure to remove any odors that are trying to build up, but they will also increase the life of your carpet, saving you money in the long run. That’s a double win!
Keep policies available and lines of communication open
Really, the best thing you can do to keep your office clean with the addition of pets is to work with the pet owners. Don’t fight an uphill battle trying to tackle issues that they would be happy to help support. If everyone cleans as they go, it’s much less likely an issue will be able to spiral into something bigger than it needs to be – that way everyone can enjoy their furry coworkers!
